Ask five companies for fitted wardrobes prices on the same room and you can get five very different numbers. That is not always anyone being dishonest, it usually means each quote includes a different scope. Before you judge whether a price is fair, know what actually moves it.

What matters more than a headline figure is whether the quote is itemised. A cheaper lump sum that hides survey, delivery, VAT, or installation labour is not cheaper once those lines appear later.

The biggest factor: size and run length

A single fitted wardrobe run along one bedroom wall costs a fraction of a full walk-in dressing room with cabinetry on three sides. Price generally scales with the linear metre of cabinetry and the floor-to-ceiling height, so the first number worth fixing in your head is not a total price, but a price per metre run for your specific finish.

Finish: the second biggest swing

Melamine faced chipboard is the most budget-friendly option, and is a sensible choice for internals or utility spaces where the finish will not be on show. Veneered doors sit in the middle, offering real wood grain at a more moderate premium. Spray-painted MDF, a furniture-grade lacquered finish applied and hand-finished in a controlled booth, sits at the top end because of the labour involved, but wears harder and looks more consistent over years than a site-brushed finish.

Internals and hardware add up quickly

A basic hanging rail and a single shelf cost little. Full internal configurations, pull-out drawers, valet rails, integrated lighting, mirrored doors, and soft-close runners each add cost individually, and it is easy for a wardrobe to end up costing considerably more once internals are specified in full. Decide upfront which internals matter to your daily routine rather than defaulting to everything on the list.

Sliding versus hinged doors

Sliding door systems generally cost more per door than hinged doors of the same finish, because of the track and running gear, but they can save floor space in a smaller room, which sometimes offsets the cost by letting you fit more storage into the same footprint.

London-specific costs people forget

In London, parking suspensions, porterage in mansion blocks, narrow stair access, and longer install days all affect the final figure. A fitted wardrobe that is straightforward to manufacture can still cost more to install in a fourth-floor walk-up than in a house with driveway access. Ask your joiner how delivery and protection are priced so those lines are not a surprise.
